Eligibility Requirements
Prospective applicants must:

• be a citizen of an ADB developing member country
• have at least 2 years work experience
• have gained admission to an approved course in a designated institution
• be proficient in oral and written English communication skills to be able to pursue studies
• be in good health
• not more than 35 years old at the time of application. (Staff of ADB and the designated institutions and their close relatives are not eligible to apply.)

Applicants should obtain application forms from the designated institutions of their choice and submit the completed form and required documentation to the Institution. Applicants should indicate on the application form that they wish to be considered for an Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarship. The AYF preparatory course before entering Japanese Graduate School as Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) scholarship student is offered by The Japan Foundation. AYF program is open to university graduates in the region who wish to contribute to regional cooperation after obtaining a Master and/or Ph. D. Degree in Japanese Graduate Schools as follows:

Features of the Asian Youth Fellowship Program

AYF consists of the following component:

• Coordination of a host professor and research plan development during the preparatory course in Japan
• Preparatory course (Japanese Language and cultural activities)
• Follow ups after completing the preparatory course

The scholarship grantees shall receive a preparatory course in the Japanese language for approximately 7 months, at The Japan Foundation Japanese-Language Institute, Kansai, Japan. The preparatory course is developed for people who have never learned Japanese language before. Grantees are provided with dormitory. Accompanying family is NOT allowed during the preparatory course.

After completing the preparatory course, grantees will be proceeding to Japanese graduate schools as Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) scholarship students (principally Research Student) .

Field of Study

• Any of the fields in Humanities, Social Sciences, Engineering and Natural Science is acceptable..
• Students pursuing study areas that would contribute to his/her country or region will be given preference.
• * Technical training course is excluded.

Qualifications

1. Nationality: Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand or Vietnam.
2. Age: under 35 years of age as of April 1, 2010 (i.e. born on or after April 2, 1975)
3. Academic Backgrounds: university or college graduates with a bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree (those who will graduate from a university or college by the Registration Day of AYF may apply, but the grants may be CANCELLED if grantees fail to arrive in Kansai on the starting day of the preparatory course.)
4. Other requirements:
   a. Good proficiency in English is required.
   b. Military men and military civilian employees registered on the personnel list are excluded.
   c. Applicants should be in good health.
   d. The applicant whose spouse has already won a Japanese Government scholarship will not be selected as a grantee, and likewise in the case of a couple applying at the same time.
   e. The applicant who has been awarded a Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) scholarship in the past will not be selected as a grantee unless he/she has had a few years’ research or teaching experience after returning to his/her country.

Grant Coverage during the Preparatory Course

1. Expenses necessary for participation in the official curriculum (transportation, teaching material, etc.)
2. Meals during the program (partly in the form of cash allowances) and a set amount of allowances to cover miscellaneous living expenses.
3. Accommodation (a single room) at the Institute
4. Overseas travel insurance for disease and injury for the duration of the program
5. Round-trip, economy-class airline between the nearest international airport from the residence and Kansai International Airport (Osaka, Japan) on the most direct and economical route.
6. Japanese visa as a trainee

*The above terms of the grant will be effective for the period of the preparatory course. After completing the AYF Program, grantees will proceed to Japanese universities as the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) scholarship students. Allowances, accommodations, and other status are subject to Monbukagakusho’s regulations.

Selection

1. Japanese diplomatic missions concerned, in cooperation with the foreign governments concerned, will select preliminary candidates from among applicants by means of a review of the documents submitted.
2. Those who have been selected as the preliminary candidates will be recommended to Asian Youth Fellowship Committee, Tokyo, Japan. The Committee will select grantees from among the preliminary candidates by means of an interview made in their respective countries by a mission member assigned and dispatched by the Committee.
3. Final announcement in writing will be provided by the Embassy of Japan after the AYF Committee. The grantees of the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) scholarship will be finally selected, on condition that they have completed the AYF preparatory course successfully, after the university placement has been made.

1.       Find a free web host. Choosing a web host is tricky in general. The most important question to ask when you’re choosing a free web host is: how do they make money? If they’re not making money from you, they must be making money from advertisements. What kinds of advertisements do they use?

• Email advertisements: Some free hosting companies provide their service by signing your registration account up for email promotions (spam).
• Embedded advertisements: Hosting companies using embedded ads will place advertisements on any pages you create using their service.
• Referrals: Referral systems require that you refer a certain number of paying customers to the company to receive your hosting for free.
• Advertising Partners: Be wary of free hosting companies that require you buy something from another company to get free hosting. If you have to pay for anything you might as well pay for the hosting.

2.       Look for a host with templates ready for use that don’t require any knowledge of HTML but allow you to use custom content if you wish. This will give you time to use the templates and get running quickly while you design your website.

3.       Become your own publicist:

• Gain free advertising for your website. Be sure to check the terms of use for your host some may not allow you to place any advertising of your own.
• Get leads for your website without resorting to spamming.
• Get your website indexed by Google.

4.       Start building content for your website. Don’t change the topic of your writing and make sure it’s interesting. For example most people who randomly stumble across your website probably do not want to know every action your dog makes during an average day.

5.       Put your website on Google, Yahoo, and other search engines. This will increase traffic. Also find other popular websites that are somewhat related to your website’s topic but aren’t necessarily your competition and give them your link. If you have more than one site, link from one to the other.

1.       Think of idea for your new website. If you already know what you want to make your website about, skip this step. Search other band sites for layout ideas. Brainstorm and write down all of your ideas, no matter how ridiculous they may seem. There’s no better place than the Internet to turn an idea into gold. You can also get help by searching the web with “website ideas”.

2.       Identify your market. What kinds of people would each of your website ideas serve? Some websites, like Yahoo or Google, are as general as it gets, while other sites, like Weebles, serve a very specific bunch. Write down the target market next to each of the ideas on your list. Conduct market research–Who is your audience? What do they do? How old are they? What are their other interests? All of this information can help you make your website more useful to you.

3.       Do keyword research to determine if other people are searching for your topics and learn more about your potential clients. There are many free keyword tools to help you get more information about your topic. You will need to find keywords that are in demand (people are looking for it) yet have some chance of finding your site. Like a site on web hosting is too broad of a topic. Forum webhosting is a little better (narrower) topic.

4.       Figure out your commitment. How much time and money are you willing to put into your website? You can start and run a website for free, but the more money you want to make from your site, the more time and money you’ll have to invest. If you do not care too much about making money (like if you’re just interested in showing off your dried bug collection) you can get away with free web hosting and sporadic maintenance.

o     Content sites will require less investment, but you will also face more competition, since anyone can start a content site. To make money from this kind of site, you provide information and generate income from the traffic you receive through advertising. The trick also will be to ‘spin’ your content and use specific keywords to narrow down your topic and write high quality content directed to specific people searching for those specific keywords.

o     E-commerce sites, which sell products, will need more maintenance and attention. You will also need to think about shipping, sales, order form security, inventory updates, and everything that a person with an offline storefront would have to manage.

5.       You can also sell other people’s products which will let you make money without investing in any products or worrying about shipping.

6.       Narrow down your list. Which ideas stand to make the most profits? Which ideas require the most commitment? Which ideas look like they’d be fun to pursue? You will be spending time working on your website, so choose the idea you are most passionate about (that is also profitable and practical for you).

7.       Register a domain name (one that’s easy to remember and spell) and choose a web host. The best domain name also includes your main keywords and some variation of what solution you provide. You can use a domain availability tool to find an available domain name. For more complicated websites, be willing to shell out the extra bucks; or, you can opt for a free web hosting, which will probably mean having a URL like www.yourdomain.webhostname.com and have ads all over your website. Read the fine print.

8.       Research online website building services – you may wish to learn HTML or CSS code, but there are other ways to make a site for people more familiar with desktop publishing software.

9.       Build your website. Here you have a few different options.

o     Get a website-building program and do it yourself. While this might work for your dried bug page, if you are unsure of your design eye and ability, then it’s probably not the best choice if you’re trying to make a sharp, professional impression (especially if you’re trying to get people to part with their money).

o     Learn a programming language (or two, or three) and build a website from scratch.

§  HTML is incredibly easy to learn, and if you are up to it, you will be able to tweak your web design any way you want, and you would not have to pay anybody else to update or change your site.

§  XHTML is the new web language set by W3C’s standards. Almost identical to HTML, it follows a stricter set of rules for marking up information – what this means, for the most part, is minor changes to the way you write code.

§  CSS, which stands for “Cascading Style Sheets”, gives more flexibility for styling the HTML.

§  A browser sided scripting language, such as JavaScript, allows you to make your page interactive.

§  A server sided scripting language (PHP, ASP with JavaScript or VB Script or Python) can be used to make things on your site move and edit or create forums.

§  WordPress is another great option for building website. WordPress is a free application that can be installed on your web server and make updating and organizing content very easy.

§  AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) is a technique of using a browser sided language and a server sided language to make the page get new information from the server without refreshing the page, often greatly reducing user wait time and vastly improving the user’s experience but increasing bandwidth usage. Think of the possibilities: you could probably make a web based instant messaging service!

o     Hire a professional. This is the best option for more advanced sites, especially e-commerce sites.

10.     Use keywords that your target audience would search for to get a better search engine ranking. There are several tools available from Google, Overture, and third party software developers that can make the keyword research process easier. Sprinkle the keywords you’ve chosen throughout your text, but not to the extent that it hurts the quality of your content. Creating pages that are optimized for the search engines will help you get your site found which is really more important than design. What good is a site that no one sees?

11.     Upload your website. Your web host may have an FTP feature, or you can download your own FTP program like FileZilla. If you hired a professional to design the website, he or she may take care of this for you.

12.     Test drive your website. When you finish your website, do usability testing. You can do this by simply asking a few friends or family members to use your website. Give them a specific task like “edit your profile” or “buy an alpaca sweater from the bargains page.” Sit behind them and watch them navigate. Do not help them. You will likely find areas where you need to improve navigation or clarify some instructions.

13.     Advertise. Submit your site to major search engines. Tell your friends. Use an e-mail address with your domain. Visit other websites that complement (not compete with) yours, and offer to exchange links. Post constructively on blogs and forums, and put your URL in your signature.

14.     Use article marketing to get back links to your website which will also help your website get found by the search engines.

15.     Provide quality content and service. Take constructive feedback seriously. Other band members, fans, and friends may all have easier navigation ideas. Think about your target market: their needs, their frustrations, their circumstances, and seek to make their lives easier. Strive for a win-win situation for you and your visitors.

16.     Now Being Edit\

1. Go to a simple blog creation site. A few common sites for blogging are: Choseit, MuseCrafters.com, vox.com, wordpress.com, Inthewire.com, Blogger.com, livejournal.com, journalhome.com, freeopendiary.com, or the ever popular Myspace.com. You can also try using a Google search for free blog hosting sites, and you’ll easily find one that fits your needs.
2. Choose one that appears to be “User Friendly” for you. Many bloggers don’t know how to make a good site, and, let’s face it, HTML is hard to learn, so check it out. If it looks a little too hard to create, and navigate the blog site and you’re confused, then don’t use that site. Some recommend Blogger, some recommend InTheWire, etc. Just try to find one that works for you.
3. Choose what type of blog you want to create. Carve out a niche and pick a catchy title that captures the essence of your blog. Remember that a blog, like your clothes, is an extension of you. For most people your blog site may be the only thing they identify you with and you want to be sure that who you are on the inside is reflected in your blog.
4. Decide how often you are going to post.Some claim that posting at least once every day is best; Some also say that three quick posts a day are far more effective than one long post every three days. Others claim that when they update a blog every other day they get more readers than when updating two or three entries in a single day. Whatever you do remember that for most bloggers, it’s all about reading and many of them would prefer content rather than quantity. Once you get started you’ll find that you attract a certain readership, and you may have to adjust how you work your journal to appease and keep the readers you’ve obtained.
5. Get somethings together beforehand because some recommend putting together about a month’s worth of material before you tell anyone about your blog. It is recommended that you just start writing and fame will come in time. Feel free to go back and rewrite entries to make everything just the way you want before or after you “go public.” You can edit any entry at any time with most blog sites. Writing a popular blog doesn’t happen overnight. The essence of the blog stems from journaling which means the blog is FOR YOU. Work it how you feel most appropriate.
6. Tell close friends about your blog and ask them to tell their friends. Often if you use it as another way to network with those people around you, you’ll get a better response. If you push it too hard don’t be surprised if they ignore your blog because they feel you’re fishing for compliments and attention…remember, blogging is about you, and the more attention you put into yourself, the more people are going to notice.
7. Look around the Internet for blogs you love. Read and post to them religiously. Leave a note that actually has something to do with their site so that they know you actually took the time for pay attention to the material posted; do not expect anything back in return. Just commenting will cause others to be more likely to visit your and do the same. Often when you make comments to sites a link to your own personal site will already be included with your comment, unless you are posting from one hosting site to the next. If you’re at ITW and you read a blog on Myspace then it would be appropriate to include such a link.
8. Build a network with other people in the blogosphere – make friends online. This is the best way to get readers and a great way to meet people you would otherwise never know. If you get one thing from blogging, this will be it.

INTERNSHIPS: Successful students will be eligible to apply for an APSC Graduate Internship. Interns will be placed in organizations and institutions within the Southeast Asian region for a period of three months, so as to further develop skills acquired during formal degree study.
AWARD STRUCTURE: The following costs will be covered under the award at a basic level:
• Academic tuition and mandatory fees for the duration of the course, including examination and thesis costs.
• A monthly stipend for room and board, and living expenses sufficient for a single student. There will be no support for students’ families.
• Accident and sickness insurance during the program
• Support for educational supplies and materials.
• Transport for the student to travel one time from their home to the campus and to return at the end of the program.
• All costs related to securing and maintaining a student visa for the duration of study.
• Professional development fund available to cover support for academic development such as attendance of academic conferences or subscription to journals.
• A research fund will be available on a competitive basis for students who wish to undertake thesis research in their home country.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must:
• hold an undergraduate degree at the time of application deadline with an excellent academic record;
• be a resident of Myanmar, Cambodia or Lao PDR;
• have experience working in at least one of the fields listed above for development in their home country;
• be proficient in English;
• be committed to returning to their home country after completion of the program to continue their work.
Applicants must complete the application materials and submit them to APSC by December 1. The APSC Scholarship Application* and the APSC Reference Forms* should be filled in on your computer and sent to apsconsortium@gmail.com. Your materials will be processed more quickly if completed in this manner, but hand-written or scanned copies of these documents are acceptable only if you have difficulties completing these documents electronically. The application materials required for this program are as follows:
1. APSC Scholarship Application*.
2. One academic letter of reference (using the APSC Reference Form*).
3. One professional letter of reference (using the APSC Reference Form*).
4. Scanned copies of all previous educational transcripts (or an explanation as to why these are unavailable).
5. Scanned copy of your passport page (if available).
6. Scanned copies of any official English language exams you have taken, such as TOEFL or IELTS (if available).
Shortlisted applicants will be contacted for an interview and selection exam. The exam will be an ITP TOEFL test but will include an additional essay component. Based on an applicant’s interest, the shortlisted applications will be recommended for submission to a university from within APSC. This decision will be made by the selection committee. Applicants may be asked to complete a further application, depending on the entrance requirements of the selected university. Applicants do not need to apply to universities directly under this program. Masters courses will start between May and September, depending on the prospective university. Support will be provided for all logistics related to travel and registration at the respective universities.

For many people, it is also one of the most difficult skills to develop. You might have excellent knowledge and some great ideas, but if you can’t communicate this information clearly, then you may find it difficult to progress to the next level in your organisation.

If you are having trouble with your writing, don’t get discouraged. While good writing comes more easily to some people than others, everyone can improve their writing. Here are a few simple tips that will improve your writing – and therefore improve your value to your employer.

Plan your writing
Before you start writing, spend a few minutes to develop the outline of what you are going to write. For a large report, this will involve writing down all the main headings and subheadings. For a smaller document, it might be enough to jot down the main points. This will give your writing a clear structure, so that all your main points follow a logical order.

Know your target audience
Think about who will be reading this document. What does the reader want to know? How much do they already know about the subject? Will they understand technical jargon? Remember, your main objective is that the reader understands everything you write.

Use meaningful headings
Use headings and subheadings that give the reader a clear idea of what is to follow. For example, the heading “Impact on Profit” is more informative than “Financial Aspects”. Similarly, titles for tables and charts should be specific, so that the reader instantly knows what information is being presented.

Use fewer words
Say what you have to say in as few words as possible, provided you still get your message across. When you review your first draft, look for opportunities to delete unnecessary words. Avoid starting sentences with long, unnecessary introductions such as: “Another important point in this argument is that”. Instead, simply write: “In addition”. Avoid unnecessary phrases such as “It is a fact that” and “at this point in time”.

Use simple language
Use short and simple words wherever possible. Don’t try to impress the reader with long or complicated words. For example, “the factory makes telephones” is easier to read than “the processing plant manufactures communications devices”. Only use technical jargon if it is really necessary and the reader will understand it.

Use short sentences
Your writing will be easier to read if you use short sentences that contain only one thought. Avoid long sentences that link two or three thoughts together. For your document as a whole, aim for an average of 15 to 20 words per sentence – although some sentences can be shorter and others longer.
If you average more than 25 words per sentence, you need to break up your sentences or remove unnecessary words. You can calculate your average words per sentence in Microsoft Word – see “display readability statistics” in Microsoft Word Help for details.

Use paragraphs effectively
Break up your writing with plenty of paragraphs. Each paragraph should contain only one main point. In general, the first sentence in a paragraph should summarise or introduce what you are going to say in the rest of the paragraph.
A good test for your writing is: If somebody only read the first sentence of every paragraph, would they understand what I am writing about?

Remember: a picture tells a thousand words
We use diagrams, tables and charts because they describe something more effectively than words. There is no need to write in detail all the statistics contained in a chart. Simply highlight the main points presented in the chart.

Support your writing with evidence
A common – and dangerous – mistake is to misrepresent your opinion as a fact. Make it clear to the reader whether a statement is a fact or an opinion. Wherever possible, support what you say with evidence.

Review your first draft
Always review what you have written before you show your manager. Make sure that your document follows a logical order, is easy to understand and gets across your main messages. Be on the lookout for long or confusing sentences.

Consumers have stopped buying and investors have stopped investing. Many companies are responding by cutting their costs. In some cases, this may involve reducing staff numbers through job losses (which is sometimes called “downsizing”).

When a company announces job cuts, it can be a difficult and stressful time for everyone involved – for the managers who make the decision, for the employees who lose their jobs and even for the employees who are lucky enough to keep their jobs.

As an employee, your first priority is to be one of the lucky ones who keep their job. While there isn’t a lot you can do about it, there are a few basic things you can do to increase your chances of surviving when a company wields the ax. Stay focused on doing your job well, make yourself indispensable by taking on important duties or developing skills that nobody else has, and build good relationships with managers and decision-makers.

Keeping your job is the hard part – but it is not the end of the story. It can be surprisingly difficult for those who hold onto their jobs to adjust to the new working environment and to get on with their work. Many “survivors” become distracted, unhappy and stressed in the weeks and months after their colleagues lose their jobs.
So, as a survivor, what can you do to stay focused and happy in your job?

The first thing to do is be supportive of your colleagues who have lost their jobs. Provide them with some encouragement and advice. If you know the person quite well, make an effort to stay in touch with them over the next few weeks. Perhaps arrange to meet them for lunch.

Also, make a real effort to stay positive and behave professionally. Many companies are not very good at announcing job losses. As a survivor, you may feel some resentment about how management has handled the whole process. While these feelings are understandable, avoid the temptation to play the “blame game”.

Don’t openly criticise the people who are responsible for the job losses. This isn’t going to get your former colleagues their jobs back. It is more likely to create a poisonous and destructive working environment.

Instead of focusing on the negatives, recognise that office morale might need a boost and do something positive about it. Perhaps arrange a team lunch or a social event.

If the process hasn’t been communicated very well, don’t be afraid to ask your manager what all this means for your own job security. For example, are more job cuts likely if business doesn’t pick up soon? Your manager may not be able to give you any guarantees, but at least you will have a better understanding of the situation.

If you are worried that you might eventually lose your own job, then try to control your own destiny. Have a plan of action ready in the event you lose your job. Would you go back to full-time study? Would you consider a career change? Which employers would you approach? Perhaps now is a good time to build up your skills with part-time study. If you are genuinely worried about losing your job, then don’t make any major financial commitments for the time being, such as buying a new house or motorbike.

While it is good to be prepared, don’t become obsessed by the prospect of losing your job. You can’t be looking over your shoulder all the time, waiting for the ax to fall on you. Don’t interpret every word or action by your manager as some kind of sign that you are about to lose your job. Try to stay positive and confident.

Finally, stay focused on your own work performance. Do your job well, support your team members and work towards the company goals.
